"How Math Drives Innovations in Google Search"For each search issued to Google, we return the best answers from over one trillion webpages. We do this for over one billion queries each day, and each time in a few tenths of a second. This requires both scale and lots of mathematical ingenuity. This talk will share several examples where novel applications of graph theory, estimation, geometry, and optimization have transformed Google search. |
Bill Richoux is currently a senior statistician at Google, and
leader of a team of mathematicians and engineers that identify and solve
some of the more involved mathematical problems in search. Bill received
a
BS in electrical engineering and a BA in English from Case Western
Reserve
University. He received a PhD in electrical engineering from
Massachusetts
Institute of Technology in 2010. Bill's interests beyond Google include
food, travel and photography.
